Message from the President

Hello again,

I think congratulations are in order Terry on the September newsleter. I feel Terry did a great job and we look forward to more of his hard work. Although you may not see much of their work, Candace has been working hard at lining up vendors and Gordon is ready for the financial responsibilies.
The October meeting is going to be dedicated to the society and its members. Information on the details can be found later in this newsletter. This meeting will give members a chance to ask any questions they might have, and answer some questions that are important to our society. The bylaws state in article II: "The purpose of the society is to provide a forum to enhance communication between and the technical education of its members." That forum is available to all members, at every meeting. For those of you that may not be able to make it and would like to give some input, please contact any officer and we will get back to you. I look forward to seeing you at the meetings.

A National BMET Organization??

A group of BMETs from around the country are trying to form a "National Biomed Organization." What about AAMI? Well, after the recent snubbing by AAMI to endorse the BMETs efforts to establish a National BMET week, several BMETs are questioning the value of their AAMI membership. At the heart of the issue is whether AAMI can respond to BMET issues or are they too diversified within the health care community to adequately represent anyone. How do you feel? Many AAMI members have or are jumping from AAMI's bandwagon. The results are to create a national organization that is more in tine with our community. Interested? Dear Colleagues:

To all the new members, welcome, to the old timers whe don't know me, I look forward to gettig to know you better. For those who have known me for years, what can I can say except thanks for voting me Vice President. Even though Victor suckered me into it (thaks Vic, only kidding), it's been great so far.

October's meeting is at the Baltimore Brewing Company. Yeah! ... Don't forget to RSVP as soon as possible because seating is limited. Part of the agenda for this meeting is an open forum to give you a chance to express yourself and be heard. If you have complaints or suggestions, this is you chance to vent.

Another part of the agenda is to discuss concerns of the officers. As the Vice President, my main concern is attendance. It is my job as the Vice President to solicit vendors and ask them to host meetings. Lets face it, it is down right rude of us to ask a vendor to host a meeting and only 15 to 20 members show up. I realize that we cannot ve at all the meetings. I myself missed the first meeting due to a lack of a babysitter. It is hard to attend all the meetings being the mother of a two-year-old. Well, anyway I look forward to seeing you all on October 20th

Sincerely,
Candace Keaton
Vice President

Here's a cost-saving idea. If you are having problems with motor repairs, try World Class Motor Specialists (WCMS) in Santa Fe Springs, CA. Recently a fellow BMET commented "if they haven't had a replacement, they have been able to rebuild anything we've thrown at 'em." Thanks to Jay Crouch, Santa Cruz, CA. You can reach WCMS at 800-359-1892.

Y2K Issues

9/9/99 has come and gone and I've only heard of a few problems.

1. OEC 9600 had to be rebooted if left on and rolled over to 9/9/99.

2. A physiological monitor rolled over to 1/1/00. Replacemnt of lithium battery and resetting solved the problem.

3. VMAX 2 Respiratory Therapy System rolled over to 9/10/2099 when powered on the morning of 9/10/99. Unfortunately this pruged all the patient data.

We'll try to keep you posted on problems as they occur. However, we are considering having another members only meetin after the New Year to hear your personal stories.

THANK YOU
A special thanks to Ted, Seth and Nicole for hosting last month's meeting at the PEA facility in Hunt Valley. It was a great meeting which included an overview of endoscopy servicing, food, drink and conversation
