Volume 18, Number 7 ______________________________________________April 2000Dues - are they important?Having to pay yearly dues is one of those pain in the behind duties that has to be done in order to remain in the B.M.E.T. Society. When talking to members about their dues, the attitude is "don't bother me, I'll get to it when I get to it". Some members don't pay until the year is almost up. You didn't pay until the end of the year, yet you took advantage of all the privileges that a paying member has. Could you get away with that in any other organization or society? A better question is, If you didn't pay your dues, are you a member at all? The question has been asked, " Why do I need to pay dues in the first place?" "What are my dues used for?" Good questions. Dues are what pay for the meetings that are hosted by the society when the vendor backs out. Dues pay for door prizes and our monthly newsletter as well as membership cards and certificates. Monthly newsletters contain:

Double Cross the Double ClickHow to opt out of the Doubleclick tracking or blocking doubleclick for MSIE browsers. Add *.doubleclick.net to the list of sites on the "Restricted Sites" security zone in the Tools->Internet Options->Security window from the MSIE menu. The Restricted Sites zone has cookies, both permanent and session, disabled by default. Doing this means double-click cannot put any cookies on your PC. You should also find your cookies folder, usaully under C:\windows\cookies, and delete anything with doubleclick in the name. Using restricted sites does not effect the sites that include doubleclick banners, just the doubleclick banner itself. Use http://www.cnn.com/TECH/ to test this method. You can use this method to add other advertiser that use cookies as well: admaximize.com; admonitor.net; link4ads.com; sitetracker.com; valueclick.com; and ads.web.aol.com
Patrick Lynch of Northside Hospital in Atlanta provides the following: Subject : FDA Enforcement of 21CFR If you haven't been followingit, there is something important happening. I would urge every one of you to go to the FDA website and view the Siemens letter at the URL listed below. It is 18 pages of the best fiction you ever could want to read. The issue is 21CFR and the legal right of end user to have access to diagnostic and calibration software. (THIS INCLUDES THE GE RED SOFTWARE.) Siemens is asking the FDA to ". . . rescind its Guidance Document to the extent that it requires giving away, at cost, of software programs used for the assembly, installation, adjustment, and testing (AIAT) of diagnostic x-ray systems under 21CFR . . .". If Siemens prevails, we have lost any chance of ever having an option of maintaining our equipment ourselves. And it will just get worse as more equipment is computer-based. If we win, servicing computer-based medical equipment just got a lot easier. I have written a rebuttal letter, which I will be glad to send to anyone who requests it ( or, if you can find me a place to post it on the web, I'll do that.) Please, do not procrastinate on this issue - it is one of the most critical events for BioMeds in the past decade. http://www.fda.gov/ohrms/dockets/dailys/00/feb00/020300/cooooo3.pdf Patrick K.
